Does Bender Apparel Donate to Non-Profits?

This is probably one of the hardest things I deal with on a day to day basis. When it comes to custom screen-printing you are going to have a lot of custom screen printed non-profit custom t-shirts. That’s right; a lot of our customers are non-profit organizations. I do try to help some, but as you will see we don’t have a lot of room to discount our prices. We are already one of the lowest priced custom screen printers and custom embroiderers on the web. I will say that we proudly sponsor our state's Ronald McDonald Houses and our local Special Olympics.
I would love be able to give away more to some of hard work non-profit agencies, but it just is not feasible to help them all.
If you have any questions about this blog please contact me personally at 888-222-9542.

How can Custom T-Shirts help my Non-Profit?

Custom Screen Printing is one of the best ways to advertise or promote your organization if you are on a budget. I have one client that purchases 18,000 custom t-shirts from me so that they can raise money for a non-profit. That is a lot of money spent to raise money, but it works. Here is why. Businesses see that as 18,000 little billboards. That is, right on the back of every one of those shirts is my company logo and 10 or so others that paid good money to be on the back. I know that my logo will be seen by at least 18,000 people in just a few days. It also lasts. We did a September 11th shirt to raise money for the Red Cross. Just yesterday I saw one of those shirts being worn around town. That was six years ago. So, if someone is looking to get their non-profit logo out there at a low price per unit what better way than custom screen printing.

What I like of Custom Screenprinting

I was just thinking tonight that I really like my job. Sometimes Sunday nights watching football I think to myself, I would love to be able to sleep in tommorrow. I must say that I would have alot harder time with it if I didnt have the job I do. I enjoy custom screenprinting. Yes, this is the only job I know, but it is alot of fun.

I enjoy speaking with new people from all over the world who are looking for custom apparel and being able to help them meet their needs. Custom screenprinting always offers up new and challenging ideas. I must say there are times that make me think to myself how are we going to get all of this done, but we seem to find a way. Screenprinting has gotten alot easier with the technology age, but customers are also wanting more out of their custom screenprinted apparel.

I will talk more about some of the benefits of owning a screenprinting business a little later. Right now I have to finish the Colts - Chargers game. Have a great night.

What size do you Custom Screenprint Youth Tees?

In most custom youth t-shirts you have four different sizes. They range from youth x-small to youth large. With shirts in this size range Bender Apparel likes to custom screenprint a eight to nine inch logo. This would be for either a full front custom print or a full back print. We do use our judgement on each order. For example if you only order youth x-small custom tees then we would recommend using a smaller logo.

The norm for custom screenprinted youth tees is 8 inches. There are alot of conditions that can change that sizing. One of the main things is if you are printing adult size shirts and you want to throw in a few youth large shirts. We would recommend at that time custom screenprinting the adult logo on the youth large t-shirts. This will be a little big, but it will save the customer a good amount of money.

If you have any questions about custom screenprinting youth size t-shirts then please give us a call at

Why does the cost per shirt change with quantity?

In custom screenprinting price is always based on quantity and I will do my best to explain why. I would like to take an example of an order that we just completed to discuss the reasoning behind this.

We just completed an order that was for 500 shirts with a 2 color front and a 2 color back. If you refer back to some of my previous post on the printing process you will see some of what I am going to discuss in greater detail. With this order we had to develop film, burn screens, setup on press and print samples to get it ready to print. This all took about 2 hours to get it ready to print. That would have been the same on 36 shirts. We are able to split that cost across 500 shirts rather than 36. The printing is actually less time consuming on most orders than the prep work to get it to press. Just think on that 500 shirts we completed all the printing in about 3 hours and it had 1000 prints. This would give us a total of 5 hours on that job. On the 36 shirts we would have about 30 minutes in printing. So 464 more shirts only took 2.5 hours more to complete.

I think now that you see how much time goes into the setup you will understand the quantity pricing schedule. If not please give me a call personally and we can discuss, that’s what I love to do anyway.

Automatic Sceenprinting Presses compared to Manual Press

There are a lot of differences between a manual and an automatic press, but we are going to hit some of the major differences today.

The main difference is in the speed of the printing. With a manuel press you have to pull every color by hand which becomes very time consuming on a multiple color job. So lets take a 3 color logo for an example. On a 3 color logo you would have to pull every color before one shirt is complete. On an automatic you can set up all 3 colors and set your index time to 11-14 seconds depending on the design and every time your machine indexes you have a completed custom screenprinted t-shirt. On average you can print 300 shirts per hour no matter how many colors are in your logo, on a manual press if you have 6 color logo you could lower you output to 25 per hour.

Another big difference is in the quality of the print. One of the concerns my customers have is in the thickness of the print. With manual printing the pressure is controlled by the printer. Most of the time the printing is a lot thicker on manual printing because the printer is allowing too much ink to pass thru the screen. With automatic printing you adjust the pressure with a guage which makes the print much thinner and makes the shirt easier to wear.

We will discuss other differences later, but these are the main 2 reasons automatic presses are much better to have for custom screenprinting.

How Long Does Custom Screenprinting Take?

Custom screenprinting at doesn’t take as long as you might think. We typically can turn around new designs in 2 weeks and repeat designs in 1 week. What goes on in those 2 weeks you ask, I will show you. First we get all of your information and artwork ideas. Then our artist takes your custom logo or design and puts it into a program call adobe illustrator. Once the design is finished we send a proof for you to approve. Once the proof is okayed it goes to production. After a few days the product is customized and sent out via UPS Ground. Shipping depends on how far you are away from the sweet state of North Carolina. It is a pretty complex process, but is very organized and keeps everything as smooth as possible. That is why virtually all customers become repeat customers and long term friends.

What color ink should I use if I screenprint one color?

When customers are custom screenprinting t shirts with a one color design, I recommend using a navy ink on light shirts and white on dark shirts. This doesn’t work in all cases, but in most cases the navy ink on light color shirts just gives the custom t-shirt a little color. Most people are used to seeing a black print on light colors, but this is dull and can become kind of boring. Let us jazz up you custom t-shirt with a navy print. Any budget can afford a one color print and now it doesn’t have to be boring. Just take the navy and place in some halftones and before you know it you custom screenprinted logo will look like a masterpiece.

If you have questions contact one of the custom t-shirt artist at and they will assist you in getting the best looking design possible for the least amount of money.

Should I Embroidery My Custom Hoodies

When it comes to how to customizing a hoodie, I leave it up to the customer. I usually want to know what they plan on using the hoodie for. If it is for a sporting event I would recommend custom screenprinting the hoodie. If it is for a corporate Christmas gift I would recommend the custom embroidery. Custom embroidered hoodies are a very nice way to stay warm and still look professional. There is nothing wrong with custom screen printed hoodie , but they are used more for sporting events or company functions. The next time you are looking for a custom hoodie give a call at 1-888-222-9542 and they will help you pick out the best custom embroidered or screenprinted hoodie for your event.

How do I advertise with Custom T-Shirts

Custom screen printed t shirts is one of the best ways to advertise. Just the other day I was at my chiropractor and he was asking about my business. He wanted to know how much it was to make up some custom t-shirts for him to give away to all of his customers. When I told him we could print up 300 custom printed tees for under $1200.00 he about hit the floor. When you think about how many people you can have your logo in front of for that amount of money it is a no brainer. One thing to keep in mind when printing custom t-shirts is to print advertising on the back. I caught myself the other day trying to read a persons t-shirt that was printed on the front and felt very awkward. I believe people are very interested in what is on a custom screenprinted t shirt, but would rather read the back because no one will ever know they are reading it.

I hope this helps you in your marketing ideas. Just remember that custom screenprinted t shirts is a cheap and easy way to reach people that you can’t reach with any other media.

What Color of Inks Can I Use?

In custom screen printed tees the options for ink colors is unlimited. We can mix to your custom ink color at no cost to you. The best thing to do is to send over you custom artwork that you would like to be screenprinted on your custom t-shirt and label the colors with you custom pantone color. If you are able to give us a custom pantone color we will be able to mix the color to your specifications. There are a couple of things to keep in mind when custom mixing on custom tees. First we use plastisol inks which have a shiny texture, so your ink may be a little shinier than what your computer screen shows when looking at your custom pantone color. Secondly, we are unable to match exactly, in most cases we are able to get so close that no one can tell a difference between the pantone card and what is printed on the shirt. There a couple of reasons why this is not a perfect science. First, the ink is not always printing on a white surface which brings in the under color which distorts the outcome of the print. Secondly, there is human error involved because it is all done by hand.

If you have any questions about screen printing your custom tee shirts with custom pantone colors please give us a call at 1-888-222-9542.

2nd Step to a Custom Screenprinted T-Shirt

Ok, last post we talked about deciding on what we wanted to custom screenprint on our garment. It probably is one of the hardest steps to complete for the customer. The next step falls on the graphic artist.

Once the customer tells the sales representive what they would like printed, the sales representaive passes it along to the graphic artist. The graphic artist now has the responsiblity of converting the artwork to a vector format which is compatiable with vector programs such as Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw. This can be either very time consuming or easy as a couple clicks of a button. Once the artist has the artwork ready for print it is sent via email to the customer for final approval. At this point the artwork is ready and we wait for the customer to respond.

The customer will now only have to look at their custom screen printed design to see if there are any errors in spelling, color or layout. This is something customers really need to look at carefully.

1st Step to Custom Screen Printed T-Shirts

I am going to take the next few blogs to walk you thru the custom screen printing process. Today so many people think that all you have to do is push a print button and out pops a t-shirt. My goal is to show you how much goes into that comfortable custom screenprinted t-shirt you have on. Things have been made easier in the screen printing industry over the last 15 years, the first of which is computerized artwork.

Today I am going to focus on the first step to receiving your custom printed tee shirt. The initial part of screenprinting is deciding on what to print on your tee. This has been made easier over the years because most people have access to the Internet or to a drawing program. This gives the customer the opportunity to narrow down his ideas and know what he or she wants before contacting a screenprinter.

This seems like it should be the easiest part of the screen printing process, but it is not. Most people (myself included) don't have that artistic ability. That is why at we only ask for the layout you are looking for and our artist will bring your idea to life on you custom t-shirts.

That is the first step in custom screen printed t-shirts---Deciding on Artwork

Why are there minimums in Custom Screen Printing

At we have a minimum of 25 custom printed items at a time. The reason we have minimums on custom screenprinting is because set up on screenprinting is very time consuming. To cover the cost of the setup we spread the cost across the 25 garments. If we only spread the cost of the setup across 12 custom screenprinted garments the price per garment would not be competitive enough.

We run fully automatic screen printing press that give some of the best quality prints available. The downside to automatic screen printing is the setup time. The benefit is print time. This makes it so that printing small quantity orders is not as cost effective. We still offer a fairly low minimum but our prices are more competitive the higher volume of custom screenprinted garments you purchase.

Let me give you an example, if you purchase 25 of the 29m Jerzees 50/50 t-shirt with a 2 color full front print the price would be $8.98. If you purchase the same custom print on 250 shirts your price would drop to $3.59.

How do I lower the Cost of Custom T-Shirts

There are a couple of different ways to get the cost of custom screenprinted t-shirts down. The first is in the quantity ordered. The more custom screenprinted tee shirts you order the lower the price per tee shirt. The second way is on the amount of screenprinting that has to take place to make you custom t-shirts. The more locations (front, back, sleeves, etc.) you screenprint, the more your custom t-shirts will be. The third way to lower you cost in custom screenprinting is to lower the number of colors you print on you custom t-shirts.
